I blame the incubator....

Cracked open the eggs to have a look and see what happened. Both chicks were well formed an black and white. They looked like their insides were in a bag on the outside. It wasn't like a yolk sack - it definitely looked like innards! Was glad they hadn't hatched as would not have been a pretty sight for the kids!

From what I can find out it is often a result of inconsistent temperature in the incubator - which might explain why the others didn't develop. The problem with a little amateur dome incubator like ours is that the temperature cannot self adjust - so if there s a window open or the sun shinning, the chicks just have to put up with it!

Sticking with the four we have until we can properly determine their sex and then...who knows!

  1. Hi All, Just read your blog about latest update. Really sorry the 2 replacements did not develope. I would blame the humidity more than the fluctuating temperature for this. Well never mind, you have 4 healthy chicks (a couple are definately hens!.... just my instinct on seeing the pics!), enough blog info to publish a very funny book and the man of the house needing treatment .... Still, this is just the start of what will be an extremely addictive but rewarding hobby...... the chickens that is, not the man of the house needing treatment. If when you return from holiday you fancy another go more than happy to post free eggs if you cover just the postage cost.
    Bye for now.
    Regards
    Mark
